Salem, VA, has some of the best parks you’ll find in Roanoke County. Check out our four favorite spots to spend time outside while remaining close to home.

1. Green Hill Park

You’ll find a ton of fun activities at Green Hill Park, which is one of the largest designated green spaces in the entire county. You can hike and bike on either gravel or paved trails, bring a picnic to enjoy at one of the tables throughout the park, or bring your kids for a fun day at the playground. The park also features fishing access, open grass areas, a 20-acre equestrian center, grills, athletic fields, and restrooms.

Green Hill Park also connects to the Roanoke River Greenway, a paved multi-use trail that connects various points of interest throughout the Roanoke Valley. The park is located at 2500 Green Hill Park Road in Salem.

2. Lake Spring Park

One of the most commonly photographed locations in all of Salem, Lake Spring Park has been one of the community’s favorite destinations since the late 1800s. You can stroll the path around the lake, relax at the gazebo, and observe the local duck population. Kids younger than 12 are allowed to fish in Lake Spring.

Residents may reserve the property for a special event like a wedding or a private fishing excursion. Lake Spring Park is located at 700 West Main Street in Salem.

3. Longwood Park

We frequently visit this park, which is the biggest in Salem, for community events. Longwood Park’s amphitheater is a common location for movies, concerts, and other forms of entertainment. It’s also a great spot to host parties, with five available picnic shelters throughout the park, including two you can reserve ahead of time.

The park also has a basketball court, a walking trail, and a large playground for kids. Longwood Park is located at 601 East Main Street in Salem.

4. Whispering Pines Park

You’ll find a lot to do packed in a small area at this local park, with a name that references the surrounding stands of pines. Whispering Pines Park features playground equipment, two baseball diamonds, a basketball court, and a tennis court. You can also have a picnic at the covered shelter, which residents can reserve in advance for private gatherings. Whispering Pines Park is located at 3551 Absalom Smith Road in Salem.

You can explore Salem in style with the affordable yet feature-packed Kia Forte. It has lots of cargo space, so you can bring all your picnic supplies and more next time you have a day planned at the park. Test drive this cool sedan today at Hart Kia.
