Salem, VA, is a charming, community-oriented town with picturesque cobblestone streets and beautiful natural surroundings. If you’re in the mood for an invigorating day out in the fresh air, there are plenty of fun outdoor activities to choose from. Here are a few fantastic things to do outdoors in Salem.

Hike Up the Scenic Appalachian Trail

If you’re feeling energetic, why not pull on your hiking boots and trek up the Appalachian Trail to McAfee Knob to enjoy the region’s most breathtaking scenery. As you climb the lovely, white-blazed Appalachian Trail higher and higher into the wilderness, incredible views of the Blue Ridge Mountains stretch out before you. There are fascinating rock formations and outcroppings to appreciate as you climb, with plenty of great photo opportunities.

Just make sure you come well-prepared with sunscreen and bug spray, as this moderately challenging hiking route takes a good four or five hours to complete. You’ll find the start of this 7.8-mile trail at Catawba Valley Drive. If you head there in your new 2023 Kia EV6 GT-Line, your car’s terrific engine torque and silky smooth suspension will handle those winding mountain roads with ease.

Explore the Mysterious Dixie Caverns

For a very memorably guided tour through an eerie, ancient, stunning cavern system, visit Dixie Caverns at 5753 West Main Street. As you weave carefully between otherworldly stalactites and stalagmites, you’ll see hibernating bats and other curious underground creatures and beautiful cave formations. There’s also a characterful little souvenir shop outside, where you can pick up a cute stone carving to remember your underground adventure.

Go Trout Fishing at Green Hill Park

For fishing enthusiasts or anyone who’d like to spend a day by the water, the stretch of Roanoke River running through Green Hill Park is a wonderful spot to settle down and cast your line. The peaceful, glistening, slowly flowing river is jam-packed with trout, sunfish, bass, and bluegill.

Between April and October, you’re allowed to catch and take home as many fish as you like. For the rest of the year, you can still enjoy some wonderful fishing, but you’ll have to release your catches back into the river. You can find Green Hill Park at 2501 Green Hill Park Road.

Race Go Karts at Thunder Valley

Are you in the mood for more of an active, heart-thumping outdoor adventure? Then head to Thunder Valley to strap your helmet on and enjoy an exciting afternoon of tearing around the go-kart track.

The long, winding, very well-maintained outdoor track at Thunder Valley offers super-fast go-karting for adults only. If you’re with children, you can also enjoy the indoor track, which allows a younger person as your passenger, or let your children drive their own go-karts on the kiddie’s track. Visit Thunder Valley at 1865 Dillard Drive.

Once you’ve enjoyed a refreshing day outside, visit Hart Kia. We’ve been providing our loyal customers all around Virginia with top-notch vehicles and personalized customer service since 1937.
