Snowballs and snowmen, warm cups of cocoa and crackling fires, an atmosphere of good cheer: it can only be that magical time of year. Celebrate your favorite season with these fun winter activities near and dear to Salem, VA.

1. Holiday Events

Get your holiday season started off right with a series of Salem-based sites that’ll put you in the right spirit. College Avenue, Broad and Main, and other downtown fixtures come alive in December for the annual Christmas parade. Check out all the festive floats and colorful decorations, and get your holiday shopping done in the many downtown small businesses. Don’t forget to stop by the Salem Public Library for the spectacular lighting of the tree.

You can also find gifts for the season at Salem Crafty Christmas and the Salem Holiday Market, hosted by the Salem Farmers Market and Salem Civic Center, respectively.

2. Salem Museum & Longwood Park

These neighbors are so intertwined that they jointly host the town’s Gingerbread Festival, where tasty wintry treats are in abundance and kids can embark on a winter wonderland that includes a visit with Santa and his train. Even when they are not making kids’ dreams come true, each is a wonderful place to visit when the seasons change.

Longwood Park serves up plenty of natural beauty that you can enjoy while strolling along the plentiful walking paths. It creates an especially splendid vision after a snowfall. And the Salem Museum is the perfect spot to get warm on a cold day while taking a fascinating trip back into history. It’s housed in the National Register of Historic Places-designated William-Brown residence.

3. Dixie Caverns

For a truly unique and memorable outdoors experience any time of year, these incredible caverns are calling your name. They’re one of the only such areas in the region open for the public to explore. Guided tours are available that enable you to get the most out of your adventure.

If you want to spend the night and soak in the winter-coated scenery, an on-site campground is available year-round. Plus, you can come away with a great seasonal souvenir at the antique mall that dozens of vendors frequent.

4. Skating Sensations

Take to the ice at this skating rink. You’ll have plenty of laughs and good times, even if you can’t quite stay upright.

For skating thrills and spills of a different variety, watch Highland Hockey unfold at the Iru Ice Hockey Arena.
