As the component that transfers power from the engine to the wheels, the transmission needs to function well for your car to give its optimal performance. Stay alert to some of the following signs that you should schedule a transmission repair from your Kia dealer.

The Gears Are Glitching

Your transmission is responsible for changing the gears in your car and adjusting the ratio between the speed and the force of the wheels. Issues with the transmission will often result in problems with gear changes, either because they don’t happen when you want them to, or because they happen when you do.

Slipping Gears

Gear slippage can be incredibly dangerous, so it’s important to get this checked out immediately if it happens to you. This can result in the engine revs suddenly changing while you’re driving, or a feeling like driving on ice, as though you have lost traction on the road.

Gears Won’t Switch

If the gears don’t change when they should, then it’s another reason to get your vehicle checked out. Often, this is the result of low transmission fluid and can be solved with a top-up.

Unresponsive Gears

A faulty transmission can evidenced by a vehicle that won’t respond or is slow to respond when you change gears, most commonly from park to drive.

There Are Unusual Noises

If your car makes a clunking sound when the gears shift, or if it bumps when running in neutral, then the transmission may need a change of fluid or further diagnosis. A buzzing, whining, or humming noise is also a sign that a checkup is needed.

There’s a Smell of Burning

If the transmission fluid is old or dirty, or if there isn’t enough of it in the system, then it will be unable to transfer heat away from the moving parts and keep them lubricated. This will result in the system overheating and you may smell a burning odor in your car.

Transmission Fluid is Leaking

A leak under your car could be one of a number of liquids, but if it’s dark red or brownish red in color then it’s transmission fluid. This is likely to cause further problems because your transmission is a closed system, which means that the amount of fluid contained in it shouldn’t change. If transmission fluid is leaking into the car and being burned with the fuel then it can sometimes cause white oily-smelling smoke from the exhaust when you accelerate.

If there’s a problem with your vehicle, you want to know that it’s in the care of expert technicians. Schedule a service with Hart Kia for the confidence that comes from knowing that your car is in the best hands.
